Hello!

I’ve told the story of my first interview with Unkle in 1998 to anyone who will listen. It was summer and I was in New York for three weeks as there were multiple gigs and interviews happening during period of time and it made sense to be based in the city (back when it was the music capital of the US). What I didn’t realize is that my New York friends disappeared every weekend and I was left in the sweltering city by myself, and it was intolerable.

One of my last minute scheduled interviews was with James Lavelle and DJ Shadow for their new project, Unkle. The guys were going to be in New York while I was going to be in Vancouver for a wedding, and they was going to be in Los Angeles while I was in New York. The folks at their label, London/ffrr Records thought it made the most sense to send me back to LA for the interview, that is if I was open to it. It was over a weekend so I was definitely up for it as an excuse to get out of town and back to dry desert heat as opposed to the hellhole that New York is during the hot months.

My ticket for the three-day trip cost $1844.00. I never forgot that as, at the time, that was the most expensive ticket that had ever been purchased for me or by me—and it was still an economy seat. But the travel budget for the Unkle campaign wasn’t being used as the guys were going to be in three key cities so they decided it could all be used on me. And I wasn’t mad about it.

It was my first time meeting James and Josh. I had heard a lot about them, but I wasn’t prepared for James’ nonstop chatter or Josh’s complete silence. I got a lot for my DJ Times Magazine Q&A which is quite lengthy for not being a cover story. My byline was accidentally left off the article, which made me nuts at the time (and still kind of does).

Since then, I have interviewed James many times (every time the word “Unkle” appears above, it links to another interview I did with him), as well as had social interactions with him. I have interviewed Josh one other time, in 2016, where he was very talkative and awesome. You can read that interview, which was for Electronic Musician Magazine, here.
