Hello!
February 12th is a special date for me for wonderful and horrible reasons. It’s my parents’ wedding anniversary. But it’s also the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in Iran. For the last few days, Iranians inside the country have been peacefully protesting nonstop, which again, shows bravery that I cannot fathom. More young people have been arrested for their resistance.
Iran’s external actions are talked about a lot, but the atrocities they commit internally, which are largely ignored, are truly heinous.
Speak soon,
Lily
Never thought I would be revisiting this one and only interview I did with Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood at Capitol Records, certainly not 30 years after in the form of a podcast. But here it is as the 92nd episode of the Pictures of Lily Podcast (Vintage Edition). Colin covers a wide range of random topics from the size of my feet to calling Oasis “assholes.” A 28-minute listen.
The Grammys are over but I’m still excited about profiling one of my fellow educators, Adrian L. Maclin, the recipient of the Music Educator Award, for the Grammy Awards Program Guide, which you can flip through here. Laurence was photo editing behind the scenes for CBS and his selects showed up many places including on CBS and Bruno Mars’ Instagram.
We’re still breathing ash and reeling from the fires in Los Angeles, and the raising of funds to support the organizations that are helping those impacted continues. My editor at FLOOD Magazine, Randy Bookasta and I put together a lengthy list of awesome items on offer whose proceeds are all aimed at Los Angeles fire relief. Check it and grab something for yourself for a great cause.
Speaking of the fires, my friend photographer/entrepreneur/vinyl enthusiast Scott Dudelson, pictured above, lost his home and was kind enough to share the experience with me for SPIN. I tried my best to do his story justice.
SPIN has kicked off a new series, “Songs That Made Me a Songwriter” and I was thrilled to have the inaugural one with my friend Justin Tranter who is always so much fun to speak to and who gave it his all for the five songs he chose. Here they are.
Never thought I would have anything to do with Buckcherry, but I am so glad that I did. My interest was piqued in this much-maligned band because Buckcherry’s Stevie Dacanay used to be in Laurence’s band, ExtraVery in the ‘90s. (Check out this video playlist of ExtraVery including a young Laurence who looks exactly like he does now.) But Stevie and frontperson Josh Todd were so generous in their interviews with me that the story turned into a lot more than I could ever image it to me. Here it is.
Olly Alexander had me at “King” 10 years ago, but it took that long for me to do my first interview with the multitalented Olly who tore me up with his performance in the limited series It’s a Sin. I spoke to him about his debut solo album under his own name, Polari, for SPIN.
That’s Bono’s son on the right, Eli Hewson, the leader of the hot band Inhaler, who just released their third album, Open Wide, which I talked to them about for SPIN. Have to give credit to Freya Perry (whom I’ve known since she was inside the belly) for tipping me off to Inhaler with her unbridled passion for the group. Inhaler, in turn, called Freya “a star.”
Got to love a trio that goes by its members’ names. Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry and Sarah Neufeld got together with their friend Rebecca Foon for First Sounds, an album three decades in the making. I spoke to them about it for SPIN.
Half the members of Primal Scream pictured above are dead but my 1998 interview with them keeps their spirit alive. I’ve updated all my founding members newsletters with classic interviews with Daft Punk (1997), Massive Attack (1998), Portishead (two of them from 1997) and The Chemical Brothers (1997). You can access them all with an upgrade. Your donation goes toward the production of the always free Pictures of Lily Podcast. Thank you!
