Pictures of Lily Wishes She Had Taken More Pictures With Noel Gallagher
Staying in touch with Lily Moayeri
Hello!
This greasy picture of me and a pre-Oasis Noel Gallagher from 1992 has broken my Pictures of Lily Facebook page. I say that in a good way and I wish I had more pictures with all the artists I met and spent time with over the last 30+ years, but I don’t, so the ones I have are that much more special. That’s Martyn Walsh, bass player for the Inspiral Carpets, for whom Noel was a roadie, to my right.
In case you missed it, the first interview I did with Noel on December 5, 1995 is Episode 80 of the Pictures of Lily Podcast. No matter what I asked him about, Noel managed to bring the conversation back to drugs. It’s worth a listen, as is the original Noel Gallagher episode of the podcast, which is an overview of my three decades of experiences and observations on him. And two of my interviews with Noel are included in the paid tier of this newsletter, just saying…
Speak soon,
Lily
If you’re in Los Angeles next week, I will be moderating a panel on “Digitalia and the Archives” at this year’s Pop Conference with some stellar writers:
, and . I’m pretty excited about this topic as since the Pictures of Lily Podcast kicked off in January 2020 and then the paid tier of this newsletter started in 2021, where my print interviews are getting resurrected, I am deep in archives mode.Tickets to PopCon are free and you can grab them here. Our panel is on Thursday March 7th at 1PM at USC Thornton School of Music Tutor Campus Center, Suite 350-352, Franklin. If we’re not reason enough to get you down there, George Clinton will also be in attendance as will Wendy & Lisa. Yes, Prince’s Wendy & Lisa, who are the subjects of Episode 42 of the Pictures of Lily Podcast.
My story on “Libraries (Yes, Libraries!) Are Leading the Crusade for New Music Discovery” just published on SPIN. This has been a passion project story of mine for some time, almost a year, and I’m so happy that it landed at SPIN and that my editor Liza Lentini had no problem telling me the first draft was “…boring…” Under her guidance, it turned into something worth shouting about, especially as the librarians in charge work tirelessly on the music platforms and the artists they are supporting. And it all happened because
told me about being on the jury panel for San Francisco Public Library’s recently launched Bay Beats. Check it here.My “The Essentials” column is back at SPIN. We’re returning in a big way with Este Haim and Christopher Stracey who have composed the score for the film Suncoast, now streaming on Hulu. Este and “Stray” each gave me their top five essentials for creating the perfect studio vibe.
Speaking of old photographs, that’s all Hollow Coves’ Matt Carins and Ryan Henderson and I talked about when I spoke to them about their single “Photographs” for SPIN’s “Singles” series.
I spent weeks listening to ‘60s icon and rock ‘n’ roll muse and now doctor of psychology Jenny Boyd reading her autobiography Jennifer Juniper then her PhD dissertation-turned-perennial music creative tome Icons of Rock: In Their Own Words. I spoke to Jenny about the latter for SPIN’s “Read Me” series.
Some time last year I went over to Venice and sat with fellow Iranian American Sharoz Makarechi in her exciting home, drank tea, ate gourmet chocolates and talked about her cannabis brand, Substance, through which she is proactively making moves in criminal justice reform. The story was my first for Pasadena Magazine. It ran in the January 2024 issue and just became readable online this week.
As a music person and an educator in LAUSD, this news about a fund for the district’s music instrument repair shop and the subject of the Academy Award-nominated film The Last Repair Shop made me extremely happy. My news item for Los Angeles Magazine.
The last paid tier Pictures of Lily newsletter included an interview I did with Beth Gibbons of Portishead in 1995 at the time of the group’s first North American tour in support of their debut album Dummy. Beth hasn’t given any interviews since then (I hope it wasn’t anything I said). She has a new album coming this May, but if you want to get a taste of her talking about music, go ahead and upgrade!
